O'Neil was a student at high-school when she auditioned in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. She was able to advance to the 100th round since the judges were impressed at her singing performances. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell into the lowest 3 and 2 spots respectively. The judges were astonished by the results and encouraged the audience to support those with great singing talent such as Melissa. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after an impressive string of performance. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and became the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the time of the show. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was made public by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
